Description
Offered . .......a scarce antique
large sterling silver and cut glass hinged lid salts jar by Unger Bros.
The piece is marked
STERLING 925 FINE
flanked on each side with the entwined
UB
maker's mark for Unger Bros of Newark, NJ. This jar is listed in the 1904 Unger catalog and is identified as
Salts Jar 2318 Chased Top
. The cut glass jar has a scalloped pattern and a cut hobstar at the bottom. It has a wide sterling collar and a hinged top with repousse roses. Inside, the jar has a gilded top and a large ground glass stopper. There are cotton balls inside. The stopper, though basicaly undamaged, is firmly stuck in place.
The piece is 4 1/8 inches tall by 2 3/4 inches in diameter-not one of the small powder jars. The piece is in very good pre-owned condition. The lid snaps shut evenly. There is a small clamshell inside the base and light scratches to the base. There is also a small clamshell under the surface of the broad glass stopper & a couple tiny fleabites. The sterling top has a few very minor shallow dings, and there is a 1/8 inch split on the cap
edge beside the hinge. The stopper is stuck-perhaps you know a trick to free it.
