Beautiful design. This beautiful Victorian era sterling silver topped cut glass jar was designed for a lady's dresser or vanity table. Inside there is still original powder and the powder puff.
    Monogram on lid.
The sterling silver top is marked on the edge from the Unger Brothers silver makers in Newark, New Jersey, founded in 1872.  The company was known for their art nouveau repoussé designs, raised relief designs such as the lid here.
William Unger was a partner to Thomas Edison in Newark Telegraph Works; when that closed he opened a metal-working firm with 4 brothers. The company stopped producing silver goods in 1914 and started making airplane parts. The business was sold in 1918.
The jar is a round cushion shape, cut glass in the American brilliant era. The lid is a sterling silver that fits tightly on the glass.
The jar measures about 3 inches high; the silver top is 3 1/4 inches in diameter and the jar is about 4 inches wide at the widest part of the glass.
