    Description

Up for bid are two unusual antique Chinese silver serving spoons. The first spoon is 8 ¾ inches long, with a silver bowl and cap and a dark brown wood handle. The flat-bottomed bowl has a hollow socket topped with an applied bat. The cap is in the form of a Ru-yi scepter tip. The spoon has a simple two-character mark on the back of the bowl. The second spoon is 8 3/4 inches long and weighs 74 grams. The bowl is hand-wrought and is chased and/or engraved with a view of a Chinese junk. There are clear characters on the sail and a flag at the bow, and a stern looking person on the deck. Below this is chased "40 Days", significance unknown. The piece has not been monogrammed. The handle is hand chased as well, with a single kanji character on the front of the handle. There are no marks. It was sold to me as a memento of the Boxer Rebellion, but I do not think it is. I wish I knew the story. Regardless, an intriguing item!
Condition on the spoons is good. There are some shallow dents on the first spoon, and the back of the handle cap is flattened. The other spoon has no real damage, just the signs of use and some irregularities from the manufacture. Some fine old pieces!
