    gourd, 5&6) the mirror image of both knots above: six-flower knot (this knot’s symmetry makes its orientation imperceptible) & butterfly knot (upside down orientation ), & 7) double chord tassels (~20”).
    The gourd component of this piece is decorated with a

    The gourd is signed (in J

    characters) towards the upper lefthand corner of the painting. Presumably, this mark identifies the painter. I

    a square. Yamatoku kiln started in the early Meiji (1868-1912) period. According to a Hizen marks book, this Yamatoku mark dates to 'late Meiji - Taisho', tentatively 1920s to 30s.

    Brown color of knots/tassels - Even the color used in making the Chinese knot is significant. The color brown represents earth and is associated with being grounded, fertile, and industrious.
