Description
An artfully carved Kris board in the style of the Cirebon area on the island of Java. The is crowned with the typical Cirebon tendrils and leaves with the body portraying characters from the Ramayana.According to family oral history, the board was mounted inside the house, to the left of the entry door. On entry one would remove their kris and hang it on the board. The thought being that the spirit of the kris would keep the house safe.
This example has holes to hang two Kris. The woven fiber mounts are missing. There are four holes, as shown, down the right facing side which were used to mount the Board to the wall.
There are minor losses to climate and age on the face of the board as well as on the back.
An attractive, authentic Kris Board collected in the mid 20th C.
