Description
This is an original Edo Period signed Japanese woodblock print by Kuniyoshi of a Kabuki actor dressed as a woman in a kimono. He is holding up what looks like a sandal in his right hand, and his bare toes are sticking out beneath the robes. The actor is playing the role of Meishitsukai Hatsu. This print dates to the original edition between 1848 and 1854. Kuniyoshi lived from 1798-1861, during the Edo Period. This print is in the collection of the Library of Congress, as well as the Tokyo Metro Library. The image is 14" high x 9-5/8" wide. There is a signature and perhaps a description at the top left, center right and bottom center. The orange seal of the famous printer Watanabe appears at the lower right. The image is in good antique condition, with a faint vertical crease to the left of center, which may be from inclusion in a book. It appears that a thin backing was applied to the print to stabilize the original paper. There is slight overall, even toning, consistent with age. Please keep in mind that this print is about 165 years old, so perfection must not be expected.
