DEREK AND THE DOMINOS 1970 Dallas Reproduction Concert Poster
This is a high quality litho reproduction of the poster used to promote Derek and the Dominos' concert at McFarlin Auditorium in Dallas, November of 1970. The band was formed in the spring of 1970 by Eric Clapton with keyboardist Bobby Whitlock, bassist Carl Radle and drummer Jim Gordon, who had all played with Clapton in Delaney, Bonnie & Friends. Members of the band also played with Joe Cocker's Mad Dogs and Englishmen, George Harrison's All Things Must Pass as well as The Concert For Bangla Desh.
Before recording, the band embarked on a summer tour of small clubs in England where Clapton chose to play anonymously, still weary from the fame and high-profile chaos that he had felt plagued Cream and Blind Faith. An article about the band in Hit Parader magazine suggested the band's contracts with halls that booked their live performances included clauses stating Clapton's name was not to be used as a crowd-puller. Thus only the use of a band name derived from a pun of Eric's and Fats Domino's names was promoted.
Shortly after recording what many believe to be Clapton's masterwork, Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs in August to October of 1970, the band toured the US in November and December of that year, with the album being released that December. This concert in Dallas happened the day after the band appeared on The Johnny Cash TV show in Nashville. By this time Clapton's name was being used in the promotional mat'l to avoid confusion and sagging ticket sales. What a great concert from a fantastic band that was instrumental in so much great music in the early 70s and a precursor to Eric Clapton's transition from an elite supergoup star to an accomplished solo artist.
