Cast Iron Chinese 12 Zodiac Signs Lotus Shape Incense Burner
10 1/4" dia x 2"h, c.
early 19th century

Round shape with lotus edge & everted rim carrying reliefs of the 12 symbolical animals representing the 12 Chinese Zodiac signs, which correspond to the 12 terrestrial branches & 12 zodiacal signs which exercise influence over periods of time.
The association of animal forms as symbols of the zodiac dates probably to Tang Dynasty but became common only after the first quarter of the 18th century.
Clean excellent condition. Nice age patina.
