Product Description
Dagomba Akan funerary terracotta head from Ghana. Old piece over 200 years old, delivered on a base.
Terracotta head is of Akan origin, and probably more precisely Hemang-twifo (southern Ghana). Members of the elite were traditionally portrayed through terracotta images which served as memorials for second funeral rites. Formerly this practice was reserved for the monarchy. Modeled by a potter, this head may have been made from the observation of the face of the deceased.
Despite their commemorative aspect, terracotta mainly affirmed the notion of continuity. They were placed in a reserved place, the asensie (the place of pottery) which marked their dissociation from death.
