    Subtle humor permeates this netsuke. Bold cuts and engraved with fine lines, stained dark brown over chestnut color fruitwood, well carved and tactile with a mellow patina from usage. Depicting Okame, the Goddess of Mirth naked in the hot tub, enjoying a backrub by an Oni demon in a straw kilt, who is mischievously looking up with something in mind. The netsuke features double-shell inlays. Engraved in a rectangular abalone reserve is the name Hidemasa, of a famed family of netsuke carvers who lived in both Kyoto and Tokyo areas in the middle of the 18th and 19th centuries. Elegant and light-hearted in style. The signature appears to be consistent and genuine in our record of references.
