Description
1964 John Juzek Viola (17 1/8”, Master Art Copy)This is a very rare, larger Viola, made by John Juzek of Prague, Czechoslovakia, and carries his label dated 1964.
It has a fine vertical grained spruce top plate; highly flamed two-piece back plate; the edge ribbing is also of flamed maple; scroll and neck are of flamed maple; the pegs and tail piece have pearl dots and bull’s-eye circles; finish is amber with reddish hues and yellow highlights.
There are no cracks or other physical damages, nor are there any previously repaired damages anywhere on the instrument.
It has a warm, full-bodied voice that can really project; yet, when played in small ensemble does not over dominate the other players.
It has been in my possession for the last 40 years, and has been used in both orchestral as well as ensemble play.
Unfortunately, I am no longer able to play due to an injury to the fingers of my left hand .
The action is very good having a very even scale up and down as well as across the neck, and the neck/fingerboard are well set (see photos).
The viola comes with a custom made wood-fiberglass-pollyfoam case.
The mute and shoulder rest shown in the picture do not come with the instrument.
The bow in some of the images is available as a separate item and I can highly recommend the EW Zophil bow, as I have played it on this viola for almost as long as I have had the viola, having acquired it from my last viola teacher, David Chappell who had been playing with the London Symphony Orchestra until he fell in love in, and with Miami and joined the Miami Philharmonic Orchestra to stay there.
The instrument measures: overall body length, 435 mm (17 1/8”); Upper Bout, 205 mm (8 1/8”); Middle Bout, 138 mm (5 3/8”); Lower Bout, 254 mm (10”); ff hole spacing, 50 mm (2”).
The Label reads:
