FACTS ABOUT THE 1932 GAMES:
These games were held during the great depression.
The Games featured almost 1,332 athletes from 37 countries and awarded 346 total medals, in 117 events.
These are the Olympic games of Babe Didrikson. She won 2 gold medals in the javelin and the hurdles events, and a silver medal in the high jump. Didrikson was later a champion golfer. In 1950, she was the Associated Press “Greatest Female Athlete of the Twentieth Century.”
Takeichi Nishi (Baron Nishi) was the gold medalist with his horse Uranus in the individual equestrian show jumping event.
Nishi's gold medal is Japan's only gold medal in the equestrian event to this day. Nishi died in 1945 as an officer stationed in the defense of Iwo Jima, and as such is a main character in 2006 Clint Eastwood film: Letters from Iwo Jima.
Stanislaw Walasiewicz, won the gold medal for Poland, in the Women's 100m dash. After her death, in 1980, it was discovered, although she was 'socially', 'culturally' and 'legally' a woman, she had both male and female internal genitalia (now known as Swyer Syndrome). Her awards still stand.
Due to an official's error, the 3,000m Steeplechase went for 3,460m, or one extra lap.
FACTS ABOUT THE 1984 GAMES:
The first Olympiad of the technological age, using personal computers to tabulate results and electronic timers to clock swimming and track events.
The Games featured almost 7,000 athletes from 140 countries and awarded 688 total medals, in 221 events.
Mary Lou Retton, the first US woman gymnast to win the all around gold, with a perfect 10 on the vault.
The first Women’s 3,000-meter run was controversial, The
two
favorites: Mary Decker -USA, and Zola Bidd -South Africa were tangled and fell out of the race.
The first Women’s marathon was run, with Joan Benoit -USA winning time beating 13 out of 20 men’s Olympic Champions.
