Description
Awesome 16.5" viola, nickname "Hannibal" (the reason is lost to history; I was totally normal in High School, of course). This viola got me all the way from High School through a Bachelor's of Music/Viola Performance at the Peabody Conservatory, standing up well against instruments costing much more. Powerful tone and capable of enveloping warmth.Appraised within last 6 months by Rodger Perrin at 50. Asking 00, any reasonable offer will be considered. Available to test drive in Baltimore. Made by Arthur W. Howe, Union, NY, 1946.
Back length: 418mm.Upper bout: 205mm/Middle bout: 139mm/Lower bout: 250mm.
"The back is of two pieces of quartered maple, very well figured, with the figure descending from the center joint. The sides are of similar maple, and the scroll is fashioned of plainer wood. The top is two pieces of quartered spruce with a very fine grain spacing. The varnish is yellow-brown, very evenly applied."
